{"id":20544,"date":"2018-06-09T08:30:13","date_gmt":"2018-06-09T15:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insidebigdata.com\/?p=20544"},"modified":"2018-08-21T15:04:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T22:04:53","slug":"ai-study-coasts-excited-midwest-south-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insidebigdata.com\/2018\/06\/09\/ai-study-coasts-excited-midwest-south-not\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Study: The Coasts Are Excited, The Midwest &#038; The South Are Not"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.conversica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17135\" src=\"https:\/\/insidebigdata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Conversica_logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insidebigdata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Conversica_logo.png 219w, https:\/\/insidebigdata.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Conversica_logo-150x56.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/>Conversica<\/a>, a leader in conversational AI for business, released the results of its <em>Regional AI Adoption<\/em> study that polled residents across the United States to see how they are currently using AI and how excited they are about the prospects of artificial intelligence helping to solve local problems.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the study show that Americans feel optimistic about AI and hope that it will someday help to address homelessness, relieve traffic and cure diseases\u2014although priorities vary by location and generation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AI From Coast to Coast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A majority of Americans (72 percent) are already using AI\u2014voice assistant functions on their phone like Siri or Hey Google (42 percent), Netflix or Amazon recommendations (40 percent), and Waze or other traffic-routing maps (32 percent)\u2014and a majority (54 percent) feel optimistic about it and the impacts it will have on our society.<\/p>\n<p>But attitudes about AI vary.<\/p>\n<p>In the Midwest and the South, only 17-19% of those surveyed said they were excited about AI, whereas along the coasts, a majority of people are excited about what AI can do for them.\u00a0 In fact, San Francisco is the city that is most excited about AI. \u00a0That\u2019s followed by New York and then Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>People living in San Francisco are more familiar with AI (79 percent) than those living in New York (70 percent) or Los Angeles (72 percent) and are more likely to think that AI will make people\u2019s lives more productive , improve healthcare and traffic, and make people safer. Of the Angelenos excited about AI, half say their excitement is due to the promise that AI will improve traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, more than 1 in 10 New Yorkers have never even heard of AI\u2014more than twice as many as San Franciscans (1 in 20)\u2014but, of the three cities, New Yorkers also use the most AI products and are more likely to chat with bots than people in LA or San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vast Majority of Americans Hope AI Can Help<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eighty-seven percent of Americans would like AI to help solve a problem in their community.<\/p>\n<p>Help with traffic tops the list for everyone but especially Angelenos (21 percent); help solving homelessness ranks highest for San Franciscans (15 percent); and help with public transportation (14 percent) ranks high for New Yorkers. Additionally:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Predicting natural disasters ranks high for West Coasters (13 percent)<\/li>\n<li>People with kids would also like AI to help predict natural disasters, while people without kids would most like AI\u2019s help solving homelessness<\/li>\n<li>Millennials are particularly interested in help with unemployment and public health (12 percent each)<\/li>\n<li>Gen Xers (14 percent) join seniors (23 percent) in wanting predictions about natural disasters; Boomers have a particular concern about homelessness (13 percent)<\/li>\n<li>Seniors would most like AI to help with gun control (14 percent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disease and Accidents Are Top Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to developing artificial intelligence capabilities to solve real-world problems, there is a basic consensus on top priorities regardless of location:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Curing disease \u2014 51 percent<\/li>\n<li>Ending traffic and accidents \u2014 44 percent<\/li>\n<li>Saving humans from dangerous jobs \u2014 42 percent<\/li>\n<li>Exploring our universe \u2014 37 percent<\/li>\n<li>Ending homelessness \u2014 36 percent<\/li>\n<li>Better educating our children \u2014 36 percent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>What this research shows is that Americans fundamentally believe that \u00a0AI will help\u00a0 improve the world,\u201d said Alex Terry, CEO of Conversica. \u201cThe level of enthusiasm for solving real-world problems with new technology is heartening.
